Capture Picture Perfect Photos

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

Pictures of your children make those special moments last forever. If moms didn’t have photos of the first food, step or trip to the beach, they might not remember them. Some mothers become overwhelmed with life and forget to capture those memories. Following these guidelines will help you easily cherish your child’s life.

First, don’t believe the misconception that you must own a professional, expensive camera to get great results. Even a basic point-and-shoot camera will produce good photographs if you follow some basic photography rules.

Your children are usually much shorter than you. So instead of always shooting downward, get down on your child’s level. For babies, lay on the floor to get eye-level. Don’t worry about looking silly. In a few seconds of awkwardness, you can get a fabulous moment on film in return for the uncomfortable position. When taking photos at a kid’s level, you’ll see expression better, bring focus to the photo, and downplay facial shadows.

Avoiding distracting backgrounds serves as another important part of taking great photos. A busy background distracts from the child and places the focus elsewhere. Before snapping that perfect picture, move the big bowl, toy or brightly-colored and reflective objects from the background. Taking photos outside also minimizes background distractions and adds natural light. When natural light is available, take advantage of this source instead of always relying on your camera flash. Sunlight makes children look their best and gets rid of shadows as it adds depth to your child’s face.

Along with natural light, you must consider your children’s outfits when striving for great photographs. Wild patterns, super bright colors or mix-matched pieces take away from the focal point of the picture, your kids. This mishap can’t be helped on certain occasions, especially when your child starts dressing himself. However, when getting ready for a particular day when you know lots of photos will be captured, think ahead and lay out their clothing. If older children fight you on this matter, give them to or three choices that you’ve selected. Solids work best for bringing out your children’s personalities. Growing Growing Gone offers many solid coloured pieces that will help you get those perfect pictures.

I Know…

just one mother’s thoughts…

I know I am not perfect, however….

I know how to kiss your boo boos to make them better.

I know how you like to be held when you need to snuggle.

I know the first time you felt happy and loved.

I know the first time you truly laughed and smiled.

I know that look you get on the face when you are trying your best.

I know the first time somebody hurt your feelings.

I know when you are sick, tired, determined, frustrated, proud … or lying.

I know you sometimes better then you know yourself.

I know that I am helping you to become the person you are meant to be.

I know I am doing a GREAT job because of who you are today.

Happy Mother’s Day

What is a Mom Entrepreneur?

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

What is a mom entrepreneur? A mom entrepreneur is a mother who has chosen her family first by working from home, in order to care for them while pursuing her passion or career.  That is how I describe myself.  I have owned my virtual assistant business for over 5 years.  I wanted the flexibility to work from home, so I can care for my special needs son, but still do what I love doing.

I realized though that the demands of a mom entrepreneur who juggles running a business while caring for my special needs child is very demanding and some days challenging.  However, I would not change a thing.  I realized that priority management has become something I have or maybe am “still” trying to master.  Nevertheless, us moms know, you cannot plan for sick children or snow days in your schedule, so being flexible, having a good “back up” plan and honest communication with your clients is your only saving grace.

Mom networking groups are growing every day.  With social media readily at our fingertips blogging and networking is par for the course for of us moms.  It so wonderful to see the support we give each other even “virtually.”

However, being a mom entrepreneur of a special needs child, I was realizing that although I enjoy the camaraderie and sharing that I get from some of the mom entrepreneur network groups I am a member of.  I was not able to find that connection that I needed of other moms dealing with juggling a business while running their child to therapy appointments, or specialists.  However, I was also finding that I wasn’t really able to connect with moms on the special needs network groups, because they were not able to relate to the “business issues” I was dealing with.

Therefore, I decided being creative and wanting to help others the way I do, I created my own network group.  Special Mompreneurs (http://specialmompreneurs.ning.com) is a “free” network group for all those moms out there that run a business from home, or may be considering running a business from home, while juggling the demands of caring for your special needs child.  At Special Mompreneurs we Support…Inspire…Share both personally and professionally.  As a member, you have the opportunity to network with other moms who are juggling both hats, that of a business woman and that of a mom a special needs child.

We share experiences, network, partner, educate and become friends.  It’s a wonderful non-judgmental, professional group of woman who share the same interests, dreams and hardships.

I also blog about my wonderful boy…Jacob at “Jacob’s Journal (http://journeyofjacob.blogspot.com).  Jacob was diagnosed at birth with Down Syndrome.  He was also diagnosed with a congenital heart defect when I was 4 months pregnant, which allowed us the ability to prepare for his open-heart surgery at 6 months old.

Jacob had a hard first year of his life, but has blossomed and grown into such a wonderful, fun-loving, smart little boy.  I was able to share our experience in a book I wrote entitled, “Jacob’s Journal – My Journey Home” (www.jacobsbirthjournalbook.com).  It’s a wonderful short story about Jacob’s first six months prior to his open heart surgery.  I wrote the book as a celebration of my son’s life.  It is an inspirational but informative story that I hope brings joy and information to first-time moms like myself who was given the diagnosis that their child will have down syndrome.  There is cause to celebrate, and that is you were blessed with a gift from God and I hope all parents given that diagnosis can see that through all the medical tubes, surgeries, medical bills, specialists and therapists.  You were truly blessed!

Shop Peacefully with your Daughter

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Let’s face it. Girls come with an entirely different set of personality traits than boys. When your 10-year-old son needs clothes for a certain occasion, he usually lets you go to the store and pick out an outfit. As long as it doesn’t look dorky or make him look like a four-year-old, you’re still the greatest mom in the world. Your daughter, on the other hand, demands that she choose her clothing. After all, “kids don’t dress like they did when you were younger, Mom.” Have you heard that one before? Chances are you have. So for those hard-to-please divas, you must select their wardrobe with much more seriousness and determination. Your daughter is determined to be the coolest chick at school, while you plan on staying within your budget.

So you try an after-school trip to the mall. Much to your dismay, it’s a disaster. Your daughter refuses to go into the stores you can afford for fear she might be seen by one of her friends entering the forbidden territory. Then when you follow her into the retailer of her choice, she won’t even look at the sale racks. There’s also the battle over decency. If your 11-year-old wants to dress like she’s 18, you are not alone. Many moms fight this war daily. Stand your ground and keep your little girl a girl as long as you can. Various designers make stylish pieces that are still appropriate for pre-teens.

Without giving up all together, talk to your daughter about what she can and can’t wear. Then promise her that if you work as a team, you can find pieces that will make her look fabulous without breaking your bank.

Since Growing Growing Gone carries so many brands that will ship to right to your front door, it’s the best place for you and your daughter to shop. Christie Brooks’ line for pre-teen girls offers capris, Tee shirts, halter tops, shorts and skirts. In sizes seven through 14, you can buy everything your daughter needs for picnics, vacation or just hanging out with friends this summer. Enjoy shopping with your daughter again.

Keep Up with your Growing Child

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

By  Elesha Jones (a Growing Growing Gone Mom)

Children seem to change clothing sizes while they are asleep. You give birth to this little, tiny baby who swims in the newborn sizes and then before you know it, they are wearing 12 months, then 24 months and then they are in toddler land. My son’s 4T jeans fit just fine one day, and then they were an inch too short the next day. He grew taller before I could even blink. Cooler weather was upon us and I couldn’t send my son to school in shorts. He’d freeze, and then what kind of mother would I be? But I didn’t have time to go to the store between being taxi driver, cook, housekeeper, tutor, nanny and all the other hats I wear. Besides, I needed a particular type of jean, not just the first thing I could pull off the rack. My son is very thin so I have to purchase adjustable waist jeans to make sure they don’t fall off his small frame.

Luckily, I was able to go to www.kidsclothing.ca at 11 p.m. and get exactly what I was looking for. There were jeans from GAP, Old Navy, Children’s Place, Osh Kosh and more, and my purchase shipped to me within 48 hours of my order. Since my son has grown too tall for the toddler sizes, I was confused about the difference between the 4T and size 4 pants. Thanks to the sizing chart at Growing Growing Gone, I was able to understand the height and weight that each size is recommended for and pick the perfect jean for my son. I didn’t have to worry any longer about him sitting down at school and showing three inches of his leg. After all, we all know how children can be teased by their peers and that’s the last thing I wanted for my little guy.

Get the Perfect Gift for a Fellow Mom

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Your best friend has enough candles, picture frames and trinkets to fill several boxes. So what in the world do you get her for Christmas? She has two kids so you consider buying something for her children, but then you’d have to get an item for each child. Then it wouldn’t really be a gift for your fellow mom. It would be presents her children are unwrapping on Christmas morning, and then where does that leave your beloved friend?

Have you ever considered getting her a practical, yet fun gift? A gift certificate  from Growing Growing Gone is a perfect gift for another mother. She can use it whenever she wants on things her children truly need at that moment. It’ so easy to order that all you have to do is go the website and click on “Gift Certificates”. You put in the dollar amount you want to spend, starting at $5. Then you decide if you want to have a printed gift certificate mailed to you or whether you want it to be emailed. If you choose the print option, it will take three to seven business days. However, if you pick the email option, it will only take one to two days to process the gift certificate. You can even send several gift certificates to multiple recipients either by mail or email. While you are there, share this great gift-giving idea by clicking on the “email a friend” link.

This is a far better choice than another set of holiday dish towels or napkin rings that are only used once a year. What mom doesn’t constantly need clothes for her little ones? At Growing Growing Gone, your friend can choose from baby clothes, toddler sizes or apparel for older children. She can replace worn-out or too small clothes with name-brands like Gap, OshKosh, Tommy Hillfiger, Ralph Lauren, Gymboree, Children’s Place and more.
